M. Butterfly National Tour 2019 Comes to Cebu
M. Butterfly is a play by David Henry Hwang loosely based on the relationship between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Shi Pei Pu, a Peking opera singer. Although it has concluded its run, the Manila staging of Hwang’s M. Butterfly isn’t ready to hang up the costumes, the intrigues, and the scandalous love story of Rene Gallimard and Song Liling just yet, as its producer Jhett Tolentino announced screening in five cities in the Philippines, namely- Iloilo, Dumaguete, Cebu City, Davao, and Baguio.
The M. Butterfly National Tour 2019 spread its wings with final performances in SM Seaside Cebu from March 14-17, 2019. Presented by Tony and Grammy award winning producer Jhett Tolentino and Frontrow Entertainment, the tour intended to bring this world-class masterpiece to those who weren’t able to catch its 2018 Manila run.
By targeting audiences between ages 18 and beyond, the producers hope that this classic drama, inspired by Giaccomo Puccini’s opera ‘Madame Butterfly’, will resonate to theater audiences from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and reinforce the message that “love, power, and deception hold no boundaries, whether in a rural or urban setting.”
The tour’s team had sent an invitation to all Cebu based media, detailing and cataloging the specific dates, events and itineraries that they had routinely organized for the play’s Cebu run- namely, a meet and greet with the cast and crew that happened at 7:00PM on March 12 at SM City North Wing, a press review with photo and video coverage which began on March 13 at SM Seaside Cebu, and Opening Night (the final presentation for the Cebu tour) which occurred on March 14 at 7:00P.M. at the same venue, SM Seaside Cebu.
