Southwall Magazine got to sit down and have a chat with Rustan’s Division Manager for private brands Mercedes Prieto and Lady Rustan’s and Lotus by Rustan’s designer Pia Hebron, where these two lovely ladies got to introduce what’s in store for this newest brand.

Tell us about Lotus PH: This is the first collection of Lotus, majority of the items are produced here locally in the Philippines but some of the fabrics are abroad. This collection is inspired for when you travel, I am inspired by the colors of the sky with the different shades of blue you see, the sunset that exudes the sense of peacefulness, what we want to feel when we are out when enjoying the outdoors. Each outfit is usually designed with tassels to add to the playfulness. Why did you name the brand that way? PH: When you hear the word lotus you think of the Buddhism symbol, when you think of the lotus flower it symbolizes a lot of things such as peace, strength, fertility and serenity. All these things is something I want to portray in the brand. Why did you decide to launch in Cebu? MP: We have the collection launched in Manila already and we wanted to launch it here because we love the Cebu store - it’s growing and people here are really supportive. Cebu is also a destination for what the brand exudes, when wearing the collection we want the people to feel like they are going on vacation, that kind of lifestyle. Who wears Lotus? MP: Basically the target market of someone who wears Rustan’s is someone who travels a lot, and we want to incorporate that vacation-travel lifestyle when someone wears Lotus. Asides from incorporating the summer feels, we have outfits that can easily be worn in the city. We want women to feel relaxed and have fun with it. Do you go by trends when designing your collection? PH: For the other brands I designed, it is not very trendy. For Lotus, it is not meant to be trendy, wearing Lotus is a lifestyle and mood.

MP: When we were planning this, I was telling Pia we should start a resort-wear collection and it is like your alter ego of Lady Rustan’s in terms of its aesthetic and it’s more fun. What made you want to design resort wear? MP: When designing for private brands, we want to make sure that every design is catered to what every woman, man, and child need and we saw that opportunity, especially in the Philippines where summer is like a whole year. What we found missing in the department store, a resort private label. We also have our private brands that also cater to the same similar market but a private brand is different because it is carrying the name of Rustan’s. In the end, we want to provide satisfaction for the customers. Private labels are not limited to clothing, there are also home accents, kids, and beauty products. There is a plan to make a Lotus collection for kids in the future.

MP: When we were planning this, I was telling Pia we should start a resort-wear collection and it is like your alter ego of Lady Rustan’s in terms of its aesthetic and it’s more fun. What made you want to design resort wear? MP: Lotus Resort is available at Level 2, Rustan’s Women’s Department, Ayala Center Cebu.
