The book, based on Dr. Yamaguchi’s doctoral dissertation, looks at the changes in urban plans and buildings designed and built before and after the administrative transition from Spanish to American colonial rule. In doing so, the book explores the implications brought about by these changes and the role that architecture played.
The book begins with a general discussion of Spanish ideas and practices of urban planning as seen in the city and town planning of Manila and Cebu. However, Dr. Yamaguchi noted that written resources are limited since previous studies were mainly done in Manila.
Dr. Yamaguchi carried out a comprehensive survey of studies and literature on this subject and coupled it with fieldwork on poblacion planning from September 2002 to November 2003 of Cebu Province where the historical poblacion still forms the present municipal administrative core.
